Cape Dorset still quite alive: new prints and carvings from Kinngait Studios

Cape Dorset is a native settlement of approximately 1,400 inhabitants on Dorset Island, southwest of Baffin Island.

Some years ago I showed here the graphic work and carved stones from the native art school at  Cape Dorset, the inuit village at Baffin Island in Arctic Canada. Mostly dedicated to printing and soapstone carving, each year they publish new works and a celebrated calendar.

The Kenujuaq Cultural Center at Cape Dorset ('Kinngait') is a native institution where the Kinngait Studios are installed, for the creation of artworks and also exhibitions, lectures and teaching.

Artists working here are not only locals, but also from other settlements on Baffin Island, who come to either learn or teach. The art center is the result of a collaboration between the municipality and the Inuit cooperative, the local native authority.

In addition to the studios of graphic artists and sculptors, there is also a shop that shows new creations and each year publishes a calendar in various formats for promotional purposes.
